On 2nd June 1953, the young Queen Elizabeth II was crowned at Westminster Abbey, watched by the world for the first time on television. Five hundred miles from London, a man called Charles Julian, who was the Master Blender at Chivas Brothers, set out to honour the new monarch by creating the ultimate blended Scotch whisky. Drawing from the exceptionally aged range of casks laid down over the years by Chivas Brothers in the Highlands of Scotland, Charles skilfully married the powerful flavours of whiskies aged no less than 21 years to craft a blend fit for royalty. He would name his masterpiece Royal Salute 21 Years Old, in reference to the long tradition of firing cannons as a sign of respect or welcome to sovereigns and dignitaries: the 21-Gun Royal Salute. Over the years, this special blend has stayed true to its roots. The porcelain flagon, crafted by the world-famous artisans at Wade, is sculpted in Cornish clay from the Jurassic era, then naturally air-dried and finished by hand with a double layer of glazing to protect its precious contents.

On the nose, sweet pears and citrus fruits are balanced with the fragrance of autumn flowers. An elegant blend of vanilla and dry oak is crowned with subtle notes of sherry and just a wisp of smoke.

In the mouth, the welcome warmth of orange marmalade and fresh pears is followed by a brave explosion of spices and hazelnut. After the excitement, a trace of smoke lingers.

AROMA

Peat-dried malted barley is married with naturally peat-infused water from the distillery’s private water source, a dark aromatic lochan, high in the mountains above the village of Tobermory. Matured in superior Oloroso sherry casks the result is a wonderfully peated single malt with an intense smoky flavorsome character.

The soft gold color of this Ledaig 1996 glistens before you. The nose is rich with fragrant smoke, toffee caramel, apple with a hint of mint, and a few citrus notes.

A wave of crackling peat sets off rich flavor explosions on the palate, black pepper then bursts followed by a light sherry sweetness.

The finish is smooth with a spicy salty tail, which disappears into the dark as the peaty embers glow into a smoky finale.

Single Malt Whisky

It’s finished in Bordeaux wine casks that showcase a vast bouquet of red berry and orchard notes, with a layer of vanilla, buttery oak, and honey.

Country – Ireland 

Nose: Quite restrained, subtly maritime with distant smoke, seaweed, and iodine.

Palate: Spicy as hell initially: really gets up your nose with Szechuan pepper and cloves, but then the spice fades and fruit and subtle vanilla notes come through.

Finish: Long and creamy with a note of custard.

Alc 56.2%

Nose: There are floral grassy notes, apples, honey, and sweet barley. A drop of water brings out the creaminess.

Palate: Floral, orange blossom, peaches, cinnamon, and honey with black pepper. Very elegant and harmonious.

Finish: Sweet vanilla, and stone fruit. Long.

Alc 55.5%

Nose: Sweet notes initially, vanilla and sponge cake and then bonfires on the beach with salty seaweed notes. There’s stone fruit fruitiness here too.

Palate: Lots of black pepper with smoke, heather and honey notes and peaches.

Finish: Black pepper and chilli with a little caramel. Long and fiery.
