Dark black fruits, cassis and plum. Layered with elegant florals and brambley forest floor notes. Soft, smooth & sleek on the entry with a juicy, rich, mid core of black fruits and a long, savoury, moreish finish.

Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked in batches by varietal and destemmed with 100% whole berries. Cold-soaked for 4-5 days and fermented in small open-top fermenters. 16 months in old French oak barrels. Individual Barrel selection to taste. Unfined and unfiltered. 2023 was a challenging vintage for Hawke’s Bay. Intensive viticulture work was imperative throughout the growing season.  High rainfall, humidity, reduced sunshine hours and Cyclone Gabrielle hitting the region in early February were the icing on the cake.  A silver lining was that the harvest was weeks behind a normal growing season, which means very slow ripening and high acids, so grape maturity levels were behind when the cyclone hit. As the season unfolded and settled into autumn, it was a very late pick for many varieties, in some respects a saving grace.

This wine has a bright ruby red color. On the nose, notes of fresh red fruits such as cherries and hints of vanilla, along with sweet spices such as cloves, can be appreciated.

From the first pour, it’s plush and inviting, brimming with ripe red berries, black plum, and juicy cherry, all wrapped up in subtle layers of mocha, spice, and a whisper of vanilla oak.

The palate is smooth and generous, with supple tannins and a velvety texture that makes every sip feel like a little luxury.

 It’s the kind of wine that shines alongside slow-cooked beef ragu or a rich mushroom risotto.

A deep, brilliant crimson with a vibrant purple core, Coleraine ’24 opens with an alluring bouquet of fresh roses, cassis, dark cherries and blackberries. Layers of dark chocolate, nori, black olive and subtle cedar add complexity, while lifted florals and a savoury coastal nuance enhance its depth, precision and beauty.

On the palate, a concentrated wave of red and dark fruit flows over velvety, cocoa powder textures, as expansive, silky tannins weave seamlessly through the wine. This enormity of scale is highlighted by a fine, focused acid line that extends to an exceptional finish. These wines are crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit purchased from neighbouring organic growers, friends who steward their land with the same care, curiosity, and high standards we hold at Coal Pit.

Their work in the vineyard has been exceptional, and it’s a privilege to showcase fruit grown with such integrity. Cocoa and Christmas cake lead the nose, layered with lifted dusty spice and a hint of dried bark that brings both warmth and freshness. Beneath the richness, a vivid Bendigo signature emerges: bramble berries, dark plum skin, and a fine quartz-driven mineral line that threads through the aromatics.

The palate is dense and generous. Fruit wrapped in broad, chalky tannins that fill out the mid-palate with satisfying weight.

This wine has power, the wine hums with energy. That ripe intensity is carried by a pulse of bright acidity and a graphite tension that keeps the wine poised and shapely.

The finish is long and tapers slowly. A wine of presence and drive, showing Bendigo’s trademark combination of richness, structure, and electric vitality.

VINEYARDS
The grapes for Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’23 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 4 and 18 April 2023.
