The Winemasters Ensemble by Nederburg, comprising a top-quality range of varietal offerings, is named to honour the South African winery’s long-established tradition of winemaking excellence. These classically styled, food-friendly wines, with abundant fruit flavours, elegance, and finesse, treasure the integrity of the grapes at every step of the wine-growing and winemaking journey. The grapes were harvested by hand and machine, then crushed and fermented on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for two weeks.

After malolactic fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak for 10 months. A rich and full-bodied red wine with ripe berry fruit, cherry and delicate oak spice flavours, velvety tannins and a lingering aftertaste.

Delicious with roast lamb, red meat such as beef and venison, red meat casseroles, poultry and game bird dishes, and beef burgers.

By talking too much about miracles, we can simply forget that nature is capricious—especially in Bordeaux… But it is precisely the succession of vintages, so different and so unpredictable, that gives Bordeaux a little of its charm, part of its interest and above all, lends our wines a genius like no other. Who would have thought, at the end of August, that they could reach such a level of quality? Ah, that famous Indian summer that we always dream of, which sometimes eludes us, but when it deigns to appear, lifts our hearts with wild enthusiasm! 2007 is one of those vintages marked by a succession of emotions — worry, sometimes anguish, hope, enthusiasm, doubt, and serenity.

Yet our most consistent reaction in the end this year was… severity—particularly during blending, with only 32% of the crop selected for the first wine—the most rigorous selection ever made at that time. All our great plots are nonetheless present, some of them at their very best: the cabernets, of course, so noble, with such pedigree, both fine and dense. Representing 87% of the blend, they dominate, as usual, the personality of Château Margaux 2007.

The merlot (11%) finds a better place this time, thanks to its full, tender and rich texture, along with the cabernet franc (2%), which clearly benefited from the conditions of the vintage. In the end, only a few late-ripening cabernets and our petit verdot did not make it into the blend, their ripening having proved too difficult. Already so charming, it’s hard to resist—even if wisdom would suggest waiting a few more years. (February 2025)

Ciu Ciu Lacrima di Morro D’Alba DOC 2021

Grape varietal & region: The Lacrima grape is rare, grown only in the Morro d’Alba region of the Marche. The Eastern most region of Central Italy between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Lacrima means “the teardrop” in Italian. The grape gets its name either from its teardrop shape or how its juice falls like tears when squeezed. Grapes were produced in the town of Morro d’Alba, 250m above sea level. Clayey soil, medium mixture.

Taste profile: Ciù Ciù Lacrima di Morro d’Alba D.O.C., made from 100% Lacrima di Morro d’Alba grapes. Produced with modern wine technologies, it gives origin to a purple-red wine with violet shades. Our lasting impression of Lacrima is the lingering note on our nose. Give it a couple of swishes and inhale beautiful notes of rose buds -Even hints of blackberry and Earl Grey tea. Slight leathery finish. Intense, red-berry-fruity wine with a persistent finish.

Dark black fruits, cassis and plum. Layered with elegant florals and brambley forest floor notes. Soft, smooth & sleek on the entry with a juicy, rich, mid core of black fruits and a long, savoury, moreish finish.

Winemaking Notes: Hand-picked in batches by varietal and destemmed with 100% whole berries. Cold-soaked for 4-5 days and fermented in small open-top fermenters. 16 months in old French oak barrels. Individual Barrel selection to taste. Unfined and unfiltered. 2023 was a challenging vintage for Hawke’s Bay. Intensive viticulture work was imperative throughout the growing season. High rainfall, humidity, reduced sunshine hours and Cyclone Gabrielle hitting the region in early February were the icing on the cake. A silver lining was that the harvest was weeks behind a normal growing season, which means very slow ripening and high acids, so grape maturity levels were behind when the cyclone hit. As the season unfolded and settled into autumn, it was a very late pick for many varieties, in some respects a saving grace.
