Te Mata Tasting Note

A deep, brilliant crimson with a vibrant purple core, Coleraine ’24 opens with an alluring bouquet of fresh roses, cassis, dark cherries and blackberries. Layers of dark chocolate, nori, black olive and subtle cedar add complexity, while lifted florals and a savoury coastal nuance enhance its depth, precision and beauty.

On the palate, a concentrated wave of red and dark fruit flows over velvety, cocoa powder textures, as expansive, silky tannins weave seamlessly through the wine. This enormity of scale is highlighted by a fine, focused acid line that extends to an exceptional finish. With immense power held in delicate restraint, Coleraine ’24 is destined to unfurl over decades.

Awatea takes its name from the historic ship SS Awatea (a Maori word meaning ‘Eye of the Dawn’) that sailed the Auckland – Sydney – Wellington route in the late 1930s. The Awatea was requisitioned as troop transport in WWII and was sunk off Algeria in 1942.

VINEYARDS
The grapes for Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’23 were hand harvested from Te Mata Estate’s Hawke’s Bay vineyards between 4 and 18 April 2023.

TASTING NOTE
With a gleaming crimson core and ruby rim, Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’23 is enticingly perfumed with blackberry, bay, violets, and vanilla. The satisfying palate is detailed, poised and texturally rewarding, interplaying plum, black olive and sandalwood notes
with salinity, refreshing acidity and bright tannin length. It has a captivating elegance that is classically Te Mata.

CELLARING POTENTIAL
Awatea Cabernets/Merlot ’23 is closed with a Diam cork, allowing continued evolution
in bottle for 10 years from harvest.

In 1886, Edoardo Seghesio left his family vineyards in Piedmont, Italy and arrived in America to begin a new life. He ended up in Sonoma County, where the latest wine industry was flourishing. In 1895, after a decade of experience with the climate and soils, Edoardo chose the western bench of Alexander Valley as his stake in the New World and planted his first vineyard to Zinfandel, a grape variety commonly grown by Italian immigrants, as it resembled the soft, fruit-driven wines of their homeland.

Bright and alluring, the nose bursts with vibrant red raspberry, accented by the rich aroma of Santa Rosa plums and the deep, juicy undertones of fresh blackberries. On the palate, lively acidity dances gracefully, creating an engaging, tactile experience that glides seamlessly into a finish of silky, supple tannins. This vintage is a vivid expression of the 2021 cooler growing season, where crisp, freshly
picked fruit flavors shine, beautifully preserved by cool nights and an extended ripening period, yielding perfectly mature tannins.

This wine pairs nicely with hearty dishes like short ribs, velvety pork belly, or luxurious gnocchi with Gorgonzola.

The 2020 growing season began with normal winter weather, mild temperatures and limited precipitation without any extreme weather events. The first half of spring was relatively dry and sunny, which guaranteed early and even vine growth. May and June brought generous precipitation that slowed down vine development causing the vines to lose the head start acquired at the beginning of spring.

However, the rain showers replenished beneficial groundwater reserves, which, together with moderate summer temperatures, prevented water stress in the vineyards.

Tasting Notes
Prunotto Barolo 2020 is deep garnet red with ruby reflections. The nose is complex: aromas of
red fruit and floral aromas follow over to notes of spices and impressions of forest floor and
plums. The intense palate is characterised by soft tannins and a lengthy aftertaste. Outstanding
aging potential.
