We make our Reserve wines only in the very best vintages. Only 80 cases of this wine were made. We selected three barrels, after elevage, which we felt were the most expressive of our site and season.

TASTING NOTE
Dark purple and ruby appearance with a pink rim leads to a bouquet of ripeness, concentration and power. This wine bursts with fresh crushed blackcurrant, dark cherry, smoky bacon and cocoa beans. The palate is firm, with depth and complexity, yet is elegant and fluid. It is velvety in texture, well poised with bramble characters and lovely structure from the whole bunch portion. This wine is both intense and delicate, and displays the attributes of our Waiheke Vineyard and winemaking. A lovely reflection of the season.

This release in 2021 commemorates the 70th anniversary since Grange was first made.

Peak Drinking: 2027-2060

The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds’ multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilising fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages dating back to the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.

Tasting Notes:

Colour: Dense and deep, bright and lively crimson-red.

Nose: Rampant scents derived from the kitchen (winery) and garden (vineyard) …
A wine-loving forensic sniff or two reveals: Venison carpaccio with a sweet balsamic reduction and olive oil. Or, uncured pastrami? A salsa verde type-emulsion with an emphasis on the parsley and extra virgin olive oil. Wafts of sticky rice pudding, apricot pip, vanilla pod and coconut husk. Spiced sandalwood, ground cumin and wintergreen notes remind of an eighteen-month sabbatical in oak.

Palate: An advancing wave of flavours, understated power and charm. The swell builds and a more persuasive wave follows …and then more, with each sip. The flavours: Laden with shiraz fruits from the Barossa to the North and McLaren to the South – ‘maritime’ and ‘continental’ climatic/varietal diversity. Liquorice, soy and malt, burnt vanilla marshmallow …Dark chocolate, wrapped in a satiny candle-like coating. Supple oak nuances – dexterously integrated, no doubt compliments of barrel ferment. The texture is creamy and velvety, with tannins that are tight and have a ‘rusty’ edge. Ebullient acidity, whilst lively and racy, is well-managed.

This latest 2022 rerelease is yet again bang on the money—it is one seriously delicious glass of Clare Valley red with an incredible four gold medals to its name…

Winery notes (2022 Vintage)
“A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329-acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However, in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, producing our award-winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.

Spiced blue and black fruits lead the nose, intertwined with high-class oak. The wine is youthful and vibrant with hints of black pepper, black plum, and a spicy lift. On entry, the palate is all blue and black fruits with integrated oak, then moves into a bunch-like spice, married with violets and black pepper, finishing back in the blue compote spectrum. A layered and detailed for those on the lookout. Delicious!”

Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique terra rossa red clay over limestone soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines. .

The palate is medium-weight, relative to the likes of the warm climate Bin 28 shiraz. The blue fruits noted on the nose are quite apparent on the flavour profile. However, the wine is orientated towards the savoury end of the spectrum. Cured meats, pepper, olives and paprika flavours vying for attention. On further inspection, almond kernels and cardamom add to the allure.

The tannins are silken, finely woven around the fruit. The acid line is as neat as a pin. Everything is in the right place, a lovely wine now with decades of potential for those who can wait.

But they are also ancient, dating back to this legendary wine’s first vintages in the 1950s. So the wine’s deep smoky spice comes from the old vine Shiraz itself, which shines here as in no other.

From the fruit too comes the pure, powerful flavour and tannin structure, which will sustain an incredible future in cellar.

“The 2018 St Henri Shiraz is a terrific effort, perhaps rivaling the top-flight wines under this label in 1976 and 1986. Remarkably fine and silky in texture yet simultaneously dense and concentrated, it showcases the amazing fruit harvested in 2018. Boysenberry, mulberry and mocha shadings all swirl together effortlessly in a whorl of full-bodied elegance, finishing long and effortless. Mainly Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, it includes smaller amounts of fruit from Port Lincoln, Robe, Padthaway, Clare Valley and the Adelaide Hills, all aged 12 months in large old wooden vats.” Drink 2021 – 2040

Today, Kalimna Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented.

COLOUR
Purple with a black core.
NOSE
The aromatic spectrum presents an array of scents that point to varietal origin. The nose is distinguished by a subtle formic character,
closely followed by savoury notes of blood pudding, aniseed/fennel and black liquorice. A hint of milk chocolate adds a soft, sweet
touch to the predominantly dark fruit profile, where red, blue, and black fruits are all present. Ground cinnamon, toasted fennel seeds,
clove, mace and sumac contribute to an overall impression of liveliness.

PALATE
The palate texture is suggestive of cocoa powder while being framed by just enough savoury oak to add structure without dominating.
Leading with black fruit characters, it progresses with dark plum and hints of gamey richness (roasted venison). Baking spice notes and
a delicate icing sugar dusting add nuance without tipping into overt sweetness. Lively acidity carries through from start to finish,
perfectly accompanied by fine structural tannins that contribute to an enduring balance. Despite its depth and layers, it carries itself
with typical Bin 28 ease; its complexity is apparent yet approachable.
PEAK DRINKING
